America In Bloom
America in Bloom promotes nationwide beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. To accomplish this purpose America in Bloom organizes an annual community gardening competition that involves communities of all sizes across the country. It began here in the United States more than a decade ago, but its origins were in Europe in the nineteenth century. America in Bloom serves as a catalyst for building community pride and participation through a focus on plants, gardens and shared work.
Coshocton participated in America in Bloom. First, in 2010 as a “non-compete” entrant and then full competition in 2011 as a part of the city’s Bi-centennial Celebration. In 2011 we were awarded a 3 Bloom rating with special mention for Historic Preservation and were nominated in the Community Involvement category. Coshocton won the AIB YouTube contest as well as the Best Community Garden, both as Best in The Nation!
In 2012 Coshocton will again participate in the America in Bloom competition when the focus will be on six categories:
FLORAL DISPLAY - flower beds, containers, baskets and window boxes.
LANDSCAPED AREAS - included here will be community gardens, children’s gardens, public gardens and parks.
URBAN FORESTRY - a well defined and strongly implemented urban forestry program supported by policies, ordinances and planning.
ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS - sustainability practices, recycling of all kinds and strongly enforced policies and ordinances.
HERITAGE PRESERVATION - the preservation and restoration of buildings, homes, churches and cemeteries. Included here will be farmer’s markets, festivals and parades.
OVERALL IMPRESSION - cleanliness and maintenance of public open spaces. The use and placement of graphic elements such as banners, signs and murals.
